The Product

Verizon Offers is the central mobile hub where Verizon customers discover and redeem benefits: partner discounts, content subscriptions, device promos, and loyalty rewards. It is a key touchpoint for reinforcing Verizon's value beyond the monthly bill.

The Starting Point

The iOS app was already live, stable, and heavily used. Android, however, lagged behind and often reused iOS visual patterns directly — from tab bars to modal dialogs — creating friction for Android users who expected native behaviors and system conventions.

Deconstructing the gap between platforms
The Problem

Android users were using an experience that felt like a direct iOS port: iOS tab bars, segmented controls, and modal patterns appeared in a context where users expected Android conventions and gestures. This created non-native friction and inconsistency with other Verizon Android apps.

  • Non-native UI patterns — iOS tab bar, iOS-style modals — created confusion and friction on Android
  • Feature gaps meant Android customers did not have access to the same benefits as iOS users
  • Time pressure — the product team needed to move fast without redesigning the entire iOS experience

The Gap

To avoid blindly copying iOS, I started with a structured parity audit: comparing iOS and Android implementations across navigation, filters, cards, and flows. This surfaced both functional gaps and non-native UX patterns on Android.

These gaps helped align stakeholders around a simple message: we needed feature parity, not pixel parity.

Moving from pixel parity
to native ecosystem alignment

From the audit, I defined three principles to keep the team aligned while moving fast.

Platform-agnostic logic,
platform-specific UI
Product capabilities stay consistent. UI patterns adapt to HIG on iOS and MD3 on Android. Data flows and user capabilities remain identical.

Feature parity,
not pixel parity
Every key action is possible on both platforms, but controls are optimized for the OS — FABs and bottom sheets on Android instead of header icons or iOS modals.

Native adherence
over shortcuts
We favor system behaviors like System Back on Android — even when copying iOS UI might be faster in the short term.

Under accelerated timelines and shared squads, I worked closely with PMs and engineers to slice parity vertically: shipping complete flows end-to-end rather than scattered screens.

10 · Reflections

What didn't work
& what I learned

Early explorations over-rotated into "pure MD3" and lost some of Verizon's brand presence. We corrected by re-introducing key brand elements while keeping MD3 structure. At another point, there was pressure to reuse iOS-style full-screen dialogs for redemption to save time — walking through System Back edge cases and long-term UX debt helped us align on MD3 bottom sheets instead.

Using structured audit frameworks shifts conversations from opinions to evidence — "here's what Android users expect" beats "I prefer this pattern" every time.

Tokens beat one-off fixes under time pressure
Defining Android-specific tokens early prevented snowballing design debt. Even under compressed timelines, the upfront investment in a token layer paid back immediately in consistency and handoff speed.
03
Trade-offs need to be surfaced openly
Showing where we deliberately chose native patterns over shortcuts — and why — built trust with engineering and product. Transparent decisions age better than hidden compromises.
